Paying Attention: Carmen Perez on the Impact of the Women's March

In the latest episode of Paying Attention, Women’s March Co-Chair Carmen Perez told us that the message of the historic demonstration was simple: “women’s rights are human rights.”

Perez said demonstrators were able to show President Donald Trump “on his first day that we were not going to go anywhere, that we were actually united,” Perez said.

Now, nearly one month after inauguration day, Perez talked to ATTN: about how the organizers’ plan to harness the enthusiasm generated by the march by creating a message that is bigger than just opposing Trump.

“It’s the reason why the Women’s March on Washington was not anti-Trump, it was for something,” Perez said. ”So now we’re trying to shift the conversation of feminism, where we are for reproductive justice rights, we are wanting people to be their whole selves as women, and what women bring to the table.”
