Why People Are Angry About Gigi Hadid's Vogue Cover

July 14th 2016

Model Gigi Hadid is at the center of recent criticism for posing on the cover of Vogue's Olympic-themed August issue, as she is not an Olympic athlete:

Hadid, who posed with Olympic decathlete Ashton Eaton, shared Instagram photos from the shoot on Friday morning, along with messages about how she was grateful for the opportunity.

Some people are criticizing the fashion publication on social media for selecting Hadid to pose alongside Eaton instead of another Olympic athlete:

Hadid, who regularly boxes and reportedly went to Junior Olympic qualifiers for volleyball growing up, wrote on Instagram that athleticism has been important to her throughout her life:

"An ultimate dream come true, I am beyond humbled. Shooting my first American @voguemagazine cover, in my hometown, was so surreal. And to be able to share it with Olympic Gold Medalist and my new friend #AshtonEaton is such an honor. I couldn't think of a cover I'd rather be on than the one celebrating athletes. Being an athlete has brought so much pride and joy to my life and has instilled the work ethic that still drives me every day."
