Frank Ocean Responds to the Orlando Shooting

June 22nd 2016

On Tuesday, Frank Ocean responded to the Pulse nightclub shooting rampage in Orlando in a poignant Tumblr post. The artist ruminated on homophobia, transphobia, religion, and the importance of LGBT pride in the wake of the tragedy.

"Many hate us and wish we didn’t exist," he wrote.

"So we say pride and we express love for who and what we are," Ocean continued. "Because who else will in earnest?"

He also candidly described his own encounters with anti-gay hate speech in his childhood.

In 2012, Ocean used his Tumblr to bravely share that his first love was a man.

As ATTN: has previously reported, he recently used the platform to pay tribute to Prince after his tragic death. Ocean explained that Prince inspired him to express his own sexual identity "simply by his display of freedom from and irreverence for obviously archaic ideas like gender conformity."
