Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz announced that he was suspending his campaign following a decisive loss in the Indiana primary on Tuesday.

"I said from the beginning that I would continue until there was no viable path to victory," Cruz said. "Tonight I'm sad to say that path has closed."

The Republican presidential field has now dwindled to two candidates, GOP front-runner Donald Trump and Ohio governor John Kasich. It is unclear how this development will affect the remaining primaries.

The surprise announcement came after Cruz came in second to Trump in Indiana, with 36 percent of the vote to Trump's 51 percent.
