The New York Daily News Just Blasted Donald Trump Over His Abortion Comments

The New York Daily News blasted Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday over his suggestion that if abortion was illegal, women should face "punishment" for having one. Abortions are legal in the United States. (Trump later reversed course on this in a follow-up statement).

The paper’s front cover for Thursday features a photo of Trump below a pair of pink handcuffs, each cuff shaped like the gender sign for women. The headline reads “Womb Raider.”

“Trump’s Whoa v. Wade ruling: If abortions are banned, there needs to be ‘some form of punishment’ for women who still have them,” the headline continued.

In an interview with MSNBC host Chris Matthews, Trump was asked a hypothetical question about whether he thought women should be criminally charged if the U.S. outlawed abortion and they went through with the procedure. "There has to be some form of punishment," the GOP front-runner eventually answered.

Trump backpedaled in a statement released later that day, seeking to clarify his position. The flip-flop left voters on both sides of the abortion debate angered over the presidential candidate's comments.

"If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman," Trump said. "The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb."

This isn't the first time that Trump has expressed contradictory opinions about abortion, as ATTN:'s Alex Mierjeski reported. In 1999, Trump said that while the "concept of abortion" made him feel uncomfortable, he considered himself "very pro-choice."
