Kim Kardashian West Just Brilliantly Slammed Slut Shamers

March 8th 2016

Kim Kardashian West faced an onslaught of online backlash after she posted a nude selfie on Twitter and Instagram early Monday morning. On Tuesday, the businesswoman and reality television star boldly fired back at the haters with a post on her website calling for an end to "the body-shaming and slut-shaming" and wishing her followers a happy International Women's Day.

The post (a short essay) explained why Kardashian West proudly shared the photos online and emphasized that she wanted to use her platform to inspire and empower young women to fearlessly love themselves and their own bodies.

"I will not live my life dictated by the issues you have with my sexuality," Kardashian West wrote.

She closed her post, "I am a mother. I am a wife, a sister, a daughter, an entrepreneur and I am allowed to be sexy," and Kardasian added the hashtag #happyinternationalwomensday.

The backlash.

After Kardashian West posted the nude photo, Piers Morgan penned a column fiercely attacking the star, her behavior, and her brand on the Daily Mail. "Of course, nudity has been a key part of her brand ever since she first burst into public consciousness via a leaked sex tape," Morgan wrote. "Since then, Kim’s ruthlessly exploited every crevice of her body in a way so spectacularly successful that it’s turned her into a multi-millionaire." Like-minded readers shared quotes from the column on Twitter:

Kardashian West addressed Morgan and others who dragged her sex tape into the conversation in her essay. "I shouldn't have to constantly be on the defense, listing off my accomplishments just to prove that I am more than something that happened 13 years ago," the star wrote.

The Monday nude selfie debacle also spurred a feud between Kardashian West and singer Bette Midler, who voiced her disapproval in a stinging tweet.

Kardashian West addressed both Morgan and Midler personally on Twitter before sharing Tuesday's post.

Other female stars have spoken out about slut-shaming.

As ATTN: has previously reported, many high profile female celebrities have spoken out about slut-shaming. Ex-porn star Bree Olson bravely shared her traumatic experience being slut-shamed after working in the adult entertainment industry in a video released on Tuesday.

"When I go out, I feel as if I'm wearing 'slut' across my forehead," Olson said candidly. "It's as if you could take out those names and print them and put a ribbon around my whole body of all the names and things that people say to me on the internet — that's how I feel when I walk outside the door."

Ariana Grande also earned criticism from Bette Midler for her image and expression of sexuality. Midler told the UK Telegraph:

“It’s terrible! It’s always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch, looking so ridiculous. I mean, it’s silly beyond belief and I don’t know who’s telling her to do it. I wish they’d stop. But it’s not my business, I’m not her mother. Or her manager. Maybe they tell them that’s what you’ve got to do. Sex sells. Sex has always sold.”

Grande responded with a tweet explaining that she looked up to Midler as a feminist hero and would always be a fan, but she was disappointed by her comments.

Model Amber Rose has also been a particularly outspoken advocate against slut-shaming, and led Slut Walk LA in October 2015.
