The Former President of Mexico Has a Furious Message for Donald Trump About His Wall

February 25th 2016

In an interview with Fusion on Thursday, former President of Mexico Vicente Fox criticized Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump over his proposal to build a giant wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. He also urged Hispanics in the U.S. to think twice before throwing their support behind the GOP front-runner.

"I’m not going to pay for that fucking wall," Fox said, referring to Trump's repeated suggestion that he would get Mexico to cover the costs of the wall. "He should pay for it. He’s got the money."

Asked whether he felt concerned about the likelihood that Trump would win the presidency, Fox said that the democratic process would not permit that outcome.

But Fox did have a message for Hispanic voters in the U.S. — specifically in Nevada, where Trump recently won the Republican Caucus — who support the candidate. He expressed concern over exit polls that showed Trump had won 44 percent of the Hispanic vote in the Nevada Caucus and said that "they are followers of a false prophet."

"He’s going to take them to the desert, and if they think that they will benefit with an administration led by Donald Trump, they’re wrong. They must open their eyes. Please, you Hispanics in the U.S., open your eyes. It is not to defend our race, it is not to defend our creed, but to defend this very same nation that is hosting you. This nation is going to fail if it goes into the hands of a crazy guy."

Trump issued a response to Fox on Twitter on Thursday, stating that he should apologize for his use of profanity.

While Trump pulled ahead of the other candidates in Nevada in terms of Hispanic support, national polls show that 8 in 10 Hispanic voters view the candidate unfavorably, with 7 in 10 stating that they have a "very unfavorable" view of him, The Washington Post reports. That's more than double the percentage of unfavorable views among Hispanics than any other Republican candidate.

Fox joins a number of world leaders who have criticized Trump over his anti-immigration policy, CNN reports. Besides calling for the construction of a giant wall, he's also proposed a ban on all Muslim immigration to the U.S., which earned him the repudiation of British Prime Minister David Cameron, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, for example.

"What is Trump?" Fox said. "He’s not a Republican. Absolutely not. Those are not the Republican principles. He is not a Democrat. He is just himself. He is egocentric."
