This Mom Had The Best Response To Being Flagged on Facebook

March 5th 2016

Florida mother Maria Corry is gaining ample praise for her viral breastfeeding Facebook post, which calls out the hypocrisy of people who flag images of women breastfeeding as inappropriate.

On February 17, Corry shared a fully clothed photo of herself breastfeeding her child on Facebook, which was repeatedly flagged for violating Facebook's "community standards."

The following day, she posted another image on the site, in which she is breastfeeding her baby but covering herself up with a photo of a female underwear model. In the follow-up post, Corry highlights the hypocritical way society views breasts, which are celebrated in sexy lingerie ads yet seen as inappropriate when mothers feed their babies in public.

"So since my breastfeeding photo which showed NOTHING got reported more than FIVE times, I'm posting this," Corry wrote. "I bet this won't be reported, because you can see this picture in every mall you step into, huge and blown up outside the store. This is not frowned upon, or ever reported, as it is seen everywhere. But a [woman] nurturing and feeding their baby is looked down on. That is completely absurd!"

She added that even though she got a lot of flak for her first breastfeeding photo, she appreciated the support she received from fellow mothers.

"In America, people have so much negative things to say about it! I'm done with this stupid nonsense," she continued. "I can't believe how much backlash my photo got, but more importantly I got tons of support and I thank you all."

Corry's post has racked up more than 26,000 likes as of writing time and encouraged fellow moms to post their own breastfeeding images on Facebook:

Corry wrote in another Facebook post over the weekend that her ultimate goal is to "normalize breastfeeding."

"If I made even ONE mother decide to breastfeed her child, then my goal was complete!" she wrote. "Of course, fed babies are best, but just to normalize breastfeeding is my goal. It is something I believe very strongly in! I am so glad that my last post is making it's way around and I hope to inspire you mommas to nurse freely, and don't care about what anyone thinks!"

Corry's Facebook post echoes the tone of YouTube user Kristina Kuzmic's viral satire video titled "4 Reasons Women Should NEVER Breastfeed in Public," which jokingly argues that breastfeeding in front of others shouldn't be acceptable because no one likes seeing breasts in public.

"We don't live in a society where it's OK to just show part of your breast and cleavage in public," Kuzmic said, before cutting to footage of a woman breastfeeding her baby beside an ad of a woman posing in underwear:
