Penelope Cruz Just Shut Down Foot Shaming on the Today Show

February 11th 2016

A Today Show interview with Penélope Cruz on Wednesday just took an awkward turn when co-anchor Savannah Guthrie asked the Oscar-winning actress to address a rumor about her "ugly feet."

"I don't even know how I feel about this, I think you said it, that you, despite what you look like," Guthrie stuttered, "that you — you've said you have ugly feet."

"No, no, no, I haven't said that," Cruz said, palpably irritated. She asserted, "I'm OK with my feet."

When prodded, the star clarified that while her feet went through a good deal of stress during her years as a ballet dancer, she isn't particularly concerned about their appearance.

It's unclear if Guthrie was simply trying to soften the blow by complimenting Cruz's beauty beforehand or if the question was merely symptomatic of the media's unreasonable standards of female beauty. It is it unfathomable or newsworthy that a beautiful, famous woman could also have a physical imperfection or insecurity?

Gutherie's comment may also have been a bizarre, pandering attempt to make the star seem like a relatable, everyday woman. So why bring her feet into it?

The anchor's previous question was equally unrelated to Cruz's career or role in the upcoming blockbuster Zoolander 2, asking her to address a period of time when she was so lonely she filled her house with feral cats.

As to her feet, Cruz clarified, "I don't know if they are pretty, I think they are normal." They are also really none of our business.
