How an Orgasm a Day Might Keep Cancer Away

January 6th 2016

As if there weren't enough reasons to have sex, a recent study found that men who experience at least one orgasm a day can significantly lower their chances of developing prostate cancer.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital found that men who ejaculate 21 times each month can lower their risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer by 22 percent. Researchers also pointed out that you don't have to have sex to get this health benefit: As long as you ejaculate, then it's mission accomplished.

The study followed nearly 32,000 men over the course of 18 years. And despite different lifestyles, diet, age and family history with cancer, men who ejaculated more frequently were the ones who showed a lower risk of experiencing prostate cancer, the Daily Mail reports.

Although further research is needed to explain how this relationship actually works, one theory is that regular ejaculation allows the prostate to clean itself and flush out any possible cancerous cells.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death for men in the U.S. behind lung cancer. In 2015 alone 27, 540 men died from the disease in the U.S. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but more than half of the cases diagnosed are in men 65 and older according to the American Cancer Society.

Despite the significant finding, Jennifer Rider of the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital warns that the study should be "taken cautiously."

She explained:

"While the new data on the potential benefit of orgasm and the reduced risk of developing prostate cancer are so far the most compelling, the data is still just observational and should be taken cautiously. At the same time, given the lack of modifiable risk factors for prostate cancer, the results of this study are particularly encouraging,"
