It's Charles Darwin Day. Watch Bill Nye Honor Him By Explaining Evolution

December 17th 2014

Bill Nye made headlines earlier this year when he blasted critics of evolution, explaining that its denial is holding back scientific advancement in the United States. Now the renowned science guy is back at it again this time with help from emojis. He compresses the entire process of evolution using the smiley faces and figures that are on almost every smartphone and chat app, taking us on a journey from single celled organisms to the intricate human species in less than two minutes.

"The key to this is time...time, time, time," Nye says. "People used to think the Earth was a thousand years old. Then they realized it was at least a few hundreds of millions of years old. Now, using radioactivity, we can tell you that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. A lot can happen in four-and-a-half billion years!"

As Nye states in his previous video (below), "Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they're at a different point in their life cycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy. Just untenable, itself inconsistent."
