Former Vice President Dick Cheney joined the list of politicians who have condemned Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for proposing to ban Muslim immigration to the U.S., on Monday.

"I think this whole notion that somehow we can just say 'no more Muslims,' just ban a whole religion, goes against everything we stand for and believe in," Cheney told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. "I mean, religious freedom has been a very important part of our history and where we came from."

For many, the fact that Cheney—a notably hawkish and controversial politician—forcefully rejected Trump's bid to ban Muslim immigration is a sign that the GOP front-runner has gone too far. Or as one Twitter user put it, "If Dick Cheney thinks you've gone to far, then you’re beyond help."

In an interview with MSNBC's Morning Joe on Tuesday, Trump responded to Cheney's comments, arguing that the former vice president was "trying to be inclusive" when he condemned the candidate's proposal.

"If he really felt that way, maybe he wouldn’t have gotten us into that horrible war in Iraq, which, by the way, I was opposed to," Trump said. "People think I’m militant—I’m so militant—but I’m the only one, practically, that you can say was opposed to the war in Iraq. There were very few of us."

Trump released a statement on Monday calling for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on." Within hours, his proposal was criticized by a number of high-profile politicians, including Democratic and Republican presidential candidates.

The statement comes one day after President Barack Obama delivered a rare, Oval Office address in which he emphasized that Islamic extremists do not represent the Muslim population and urged Americans to reject Islamophobia.

"Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, our co-workers, our sports heroes—and yes, they are our men and women in uniform who are willing to die in defense of our country," Obama said. "We have to remember that."
