Male Survivors of Sexual Assault Bravely Share Their Stories In Project Unbreakable

A photography project called Project Unbreakable serves as an online platform to give a voice to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. Many of those survivors are men.

In 2011, Grace Brown was then 19 years old and a photography student living in New York City when a friend told her that she was sexually assaulted. Although Brown had heard stories of sexual assault before, this one affected her in a different way. That next day she came up with the idea for Project Unbreakable, which invites people from all gender identities and backgrounds to share stories of survival on the Project Unbreakable Tumblr.

Since then, the blog has published hundreds of submissions that survivors have sent in. (The project accepts submissions from all survivors, except children.) And although many people believe that sexual assault is only committed by men against women, Brown University reports, 3 percent of American men — or one in 33 — have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. Those numbers may actually be much higher, given that sexual assault is so often underreported.
