Dancing With the Stars Takes Absurd Stance On Same-Sex Dancing

November 13th 2015

ABC won’t allow two men to dance as a couple on the hit show “Dancing with the Stars” (DWTS), Business Insider reports.

Openly gay artist Jake Hagood, who is known as Who Is Fancy, is set to perform on DWTS alongside Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor on Nov. 23, according to Business Insider. He’s debuting a new song called “Boys Like You,” which is a song about two men falling in love with each other.

When his choreographer suggested that two men dance with each other to "Boys Like You," TMZ reports that an ABC producer responded to the request with:

"Apologies all but this is a definitive no from the network."

Men are apparently allowed to dance “near” each other, according to TMZ, in a performance like the one below.

This isn’t the same type of intimate style of ballroom dancing that is often featured on DWTS, however. A performance by current contestant Bindi Irwin shows that intimate dancing is acceptable for heterosexual dance partners.

Same-sex marriage was established as a right in all 50 states after a Supreme Court ruling in June made it legal. But the fact that the producers at ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" are reportedly not allowing two men to dance wit each other makes it clear that there is still a long march ahead for the LGBT community.
