The Powerful Reason Tons of Men Are Painting Their Nails

October 12th 2015

Men are sharing photos of their painted fingernails on social media alongside the hashtag #PolishedMan to spread awareness about child abuse.

Elliot Costello, CEO of Australian-based nonprofit Ygap, started the campaign after partaking in a charity project in Cambodia and meeting a girl named Thea, who was the victim of severe sexual abuse while living in an orphanage. After hearing Thea's story, Costello called upon men to paint a single fingernail and share a photo of it to highlight the statistic that one in five children will endure physical and sexual abuse before turning 18.

According to BuzzFeed News, the campaign aims to raise money for abused children and encourage men to be positive role models.

"By challenging men, we empower them as leaders and encourage them to become a part of the solution," a representative for the project told BuzzFeed News. "Our hope is to create a global movement that will lead change in the conversation about what it means to be a man."
