Kristen Stewart Has a Unique Response to Kim Davis

September 15th 2015

Similar to many public figures, actress Kristen Stewart is commenting on defiant Rowan County, Kentucky clerk Kim Davis. Stewart, however, holds a more nuanced view of the embattled Apostolic Christian who went to jail last week for violating the U.S. Supreme Court's June ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states.

Speaking to the Daily Beast about her views on heartbreak, prescription drugs, mental health, and her new sci-fi film "Equals," she shortly broached the subject of LGBT rights. In a conversation with Daily Beast's Marlow Stern, Stewart says she pities Davis for being such a closed-minded person who refused to do her job based on her beliefs and logic.

"Did you see her come out of jail?" Stewart said. "Honestly, it makes me so deeply uncomfortable. I feel really bad for her. Anyone who’s so closed off to things that are so apparent? Imagine what else she’s missing out on in life. I’m not making any grand statements about her personally, but if something so glaringly obvious, such as this subject…"

When the Daily Beast reporter jumped in to say it must be awful to be such a hateful person like Davis, Stewart responded, "That’s why I feel bad for her. It’s like, 'Oh, buddy, that must suck.'That fear of the unknown cripples people, breeds hate, and it’s just very sad."

This perspective is especially interesting coming from Stewart, who has been rumored to be gay or bisexual in recent months. Earlier this year, the Sunday Mirror reported Stewart's mother Jules Stewart confirmed her daughter was dating personal assistant Alicia Cargile. Though her mom later denied confirming this relationship to the publication, Stewart went on to do a somewhat revealing interview about her sexuality in NYLON magazine.

“Google me, I’m not hiding,” she told the publication with regards to her sexuality. "I am an actress, man. I live in the fucking ambiguity of this life and I love it. I don’t feel like it would be true for me to be like, ‘I’m coming out!’ No, I do a job. Until I decide that I’m starting a foundation or that I have some perspective or opinion that other people should be receiving…I don’t. I’m just a kid making movies."
