Post Confederate Flag, Movement Grows To Get Bree Newsome's Charges Dropped

July 10th 2015

In a series of Twitter posts this morning, activist and filmmaker Brittney "Bree" Newsome addressed criminal charges brought against her and fellow activist James Tyson last month after the 30-year-old scaled a flagpole outside the South Carolina statehouse and removed a Confederate battle flag.

Here is a video of Bree's removal:

Controversy surrounding the Charleston shooting prompted state lawmakers to debate the flag's continued display at the government facility—and after a late night session Wednesday, the South Carolina legislature voted to discard the Civil War-era symbol permanently. It was officially removed on Friday afternoon.

On Twitter, Newsome supporters have adopted the hashtags, #DropTheCharges and #FreeBree, a trending topic expressing frustration over the fact that, despite the flag's official removal, the 30-year-old activist—if convicted—faces charges of defacing state property, an aggravated misdemeanor, punishable by up to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Richland County Deputy Solicitor Paulette Edwards declined to comment as to whether the state prosecutor will drop charges against Newsome or Tyson.

The state's governor, Nikki Haley, took a stand in support of the flag's expulsion in an poignant press conference last month. She signed the bill to remove it on Thursday.
