Larry Wilmore Has the Perfect Response to Bree Newsome's Removal of the Confederate Flag

June 30th 2015

Larry Wilmore celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage with "gay Monday" on "The Nightly Show." The show included champagne, singing from the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, rainbow everything, a scathing monologue about those who oppose the ruling, and an insightful panel of comedians and activists (including the ever-thoughtful transgender activist Janet Mock). The panel discussed the continued fight for LGBT rights -- including with helping homeless LGBTQ youth, supporting transgender rights, and gaining support for those in the LGBTQ community who may not want to get married.

Sandwiched between Wilmore's monologue on gay marriage and the panel was a sketch highlighting another major source of news last week: the Confederate flag. Wilmore spoke out in support of activist Bree Newsome, who on Saturday morning climbed a flag poll in Columbia, South Carolina to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol grounds. Watch what Wilmore had to say about her act of courage:
