Twitter Reacts To Media Coverage of Charleston Shooting

June 18th 2015

On Wednesday evening, nine people were killed in a mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina. Authorities have identified a white man, 21-year-old Dylann Roff, as the suspected gunman.

Many people, however, are unhappy with the way the media has covered the shooting so far. Charleston police chief Gregory Mullen stated in a press conference that he believes the act was a hate crime, but some feel the shooter should also be described in the media as a white supremacist or a terrorist rather than merely a mentally ill person.
