John R. Lynch was born a slave and became a U.S. Congressman at age 26; Mary Meachum was a former slave and was arrested for helping slaves escape the South; Harriet Ann Jacobs escaped slavery and became a leading abolitionist; George Henry Thomas spurned his slaveholding family to fight for the Union; Moncure Conway freed his family’s slaves and became an abolitionist.
