Read All of Former FBI Director James Comey's Prepared Remarks

June 7th 2017

On Wednesday, former FBI Director James Comey's prepared opening remarks were published by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Comey is scheduled to testify before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Thursday.

Comey was fired by President Donald Trump on May 9, which the White House initially blamed on his handling of the Hillary Clinton email case. Trump later admitted that whatever story the White House was giving was spin, and that he'd fired Comey because the FBI was "in turmoil" and because, as he told NBC's Lester Holt in an interview, "this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won'."

The seven page document can be read in full below. Here are some key takeaways:

  1. Trump had multiple points of contact with Comey: The former FBI director recalled "nine one-on-one conversations with President Trump in four months—three in person and six on the phone." In contrast, he spoke in person with President Obama twice during his entire tenure and never on the phone. (page 1)
  2. Despite disavowing what is known as the "Christopher Steele dossier," and the allegations of sexually compromising material it contains, Trump brought it up to Comey several times, including asking him to possibly confirm that "it never happened" and affirming that he was not "involved with Russian hookers." (pages 4, 6)

  3. The investigations are causing a "cloud" over the Trump Administration: At several points, Comey writes that Trump refers to "lifting the cloud," and that the investigation was "interfering with his ability to make deals for the country." (pages 6, 7)
