What You Need to Know From the Bruce Jenner Interview

April 25th 2015

On Friday night, Bruce Jenner sat down with ABC's Diane Sawyer for a highly-anticipated two hour interview. From the outset of the interview Bruce came out as transgender. This is the last interview that Jenner will do as a man.

"I'm me. I'm a person. this is who I am," Jenner said. "I'm not stuck in anybody's body. My brain is much more female than male. For all intents and purposes, I am a woman. People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life it is part of me, that female side is part of me. That's who I am."

"As of now I have all the male parts and all that kind of stuff, so in a lot of ways we're different, but we still identify as female," Jenner continued in the interview. "And that's very hard for Bruce Jenner today. Why? I don't want to disappoint people."

Jenner hopes to "change the world" with this interview and hopefully make the transgender community feel less alone. Twitter thus far is responding with respect and encouragement:

Hopefully the media will treat Jenner with the respect that he deserves (Jenner used a male pronoun during the interview, which is why we are) -- respect that ATTN:'s Aron Macarow has written about -- unlike an insensitive In Touch magazine cover.

The interview is an important cultural moment -- raising broader awareness for and about the transgender community. Watch ATTN:'s video about gender-neutral bathrooms below:
