Massachusetts became one of the first states on the East Coast to legalize marijuana for recreational use on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press and local media outlets

Voters passed a measure to legalize the sale, cultivation, and use of recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older.

Though polling showed significant support for the Massachusetts initiative in the final days before the election, the state was considered a tossup among legalization advocates earlier this year.

It has only been four years since Massachusetts voters passed a measure that enacted a statewide medical marijuana system.
