Actress Kristen Stewart knows a lot about conducting romantic relationships in the spotlight. She famously dated her "Twilight" co-star Rob Pattinson for several years, much to the satisfaction and obsession of "Twilight" series fans.

Stewart and Pattinson broke up in 2013, and Stewart's more recent relationship with a woman named Alicia Cargile dates back to sometime in 2014. In a new interview with Elle U.K., Stewart opened up about the very different ways she has conducted her relationships with men versus her relationship with a woman in the media:

"When I was dating a guy I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialized, so I didn’t like it. We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something that it’s not.’ I didn’t like that."

When rumors started circulating that she and Cargile were together, she became more open about sharing her relationship because she didn't want to send the message that dating another woman isn't OK:

"But then it changed when I started dating a girl. I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”

Stewart has broached the subject of her sexuality before.

Last summer, the actress made headlines after her mother Jules Stewart allegedly confirmed to British newspaper the Mirror that her daughter was dating Cargile. Jules Stewart denied saying anything about her daughter's sexuality in her interview with the publication. Nylon Magazine interviewed Kristen Stewart a few months later, however, and she gave the magazine a telling statement about her sexuality, "Google me, I’m not hiding."
