First, Donald Trump complained about President Barack Obama's endorsement of Clinton.
"Obama just endorsed Crooked Hillary," Trump wrote. "He wants four more years of Obama—but nobody else does!"
In response, Clinton quoted the tweet and wrote "Delete your account," borrowing from the long-running Twitter trope.
The tweet proved immediately popular, garnering more likes and shares in an hour than any other tweet posted throughout her campaign, according to Clinton’s director of social media Alex Wall.
Two hours later, Trump punched back. He credited the viral tweet to her campaign staff and referenced Clinton's email scandal in the same tweet.
"How long did it take your staff of 823 people to think that up--and where are your 33,000 emails that you deleted?" Trump wrote.
Clinton's last headline-grabbing tweet appeared in March when her post about a GOP debate became the most retweeted moment of the event, The Hill reports.
But even that tweet — which currently has about 25,000 retweets — pales in comparison to Thursday's.
Clinton has been celebrating her newly secured status as the Democratic party's presumptive nominee following a string of victories in the June 7 primaries and caucuses. On Thursday, Obama formally endorsed her in a three-minute video about the candidate's qualifications.
