Donald Trump's Taco Bowl Tweet Is Blowing People's Minds

May 5th 2016

Donald Trump is celebrating Cinco De Mayo, lauding the chefs under his employ, and communicating his affection for the Hispanic community at large — with a taco bowl.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee posted a picture of himself on Thursday eating a "Taco fiesta!" from the Trump Tower Café, in the New York City skyscraper of the same name. "Happy #CincoDeMayo!" The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill," the tweet read. "I love Hispanics!"

The tweet garnered swift backlash online, where commenters questioned the veracity of the candidate's claim, especially as communicated by a dish that does not exactly scream "authentic."

Others read into the dish, whose crispy, gilded walls, they observed, appear to mimic one of Tump's most talked-about banner platform issues.

Others on Facebook voiced their support for the candidate, and attempted to clear up what they say is misperceived racism from both Trump and his supporters. Here's the top comment on the post, which had over 9,000 likes at the time of writing:

The tweet also got the attention of the business mogul's fellow political contenders, who highlighted an apparent inconsistency embedded into Trump's position on immigration.

Donald Trump's support among Hispanic voters is lacking, with a whopping 77 percent of Hispanic people in the U.S. reporting an unfavorable image of the candidate, according to a recent Gallup poll. Trump has been criticized for racist overtones in his political rhetoric about illegal immigration. "They're sending criminals. Rapists... some I assume are good people," Trump said of undocumented Mexican immigrants last June.
