The New York Daily News Just Summed up the Republican Party Right Now

May 4th 2016

The New York Daily News is mourning the death of the Republican party as we know it, as party front-runner Donald Trump's path to the nomination becomes all but certain.

The cover, which reads "Republican Party 1854-2016," was previewed on Tuesday night following Trump's sweeping victory in Indiana's GOP primary race. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to mourn the GOP, a once-great political party, killed by epidemic of Trump," it reads.

In a surprising turn, Trump's win on Tuesday ended the campaign of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who was seen as the party's best-shot candidate to win against the business mogul.

The win marked a turning point in the race, positioning Trump — and his divisive political style— to easily clinch the delegates needed in order to secure the nomination. Trump's candidacy has shaken the Republican party to its core, and his success has spurred introspection about the party's voting base. Some prominent members, including former presidential candidate and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, sounded the alarm bells following Tuesday's primary results.
