Adele Opens up About Growing Facial Hair While Pregnant

March 30th 2016

Singer Adele worships her 3-year-old son Angelo, but she's not afraid to call out some of the non-glamorous aspects of pregnancy, and the stigma breastfeeding moms face. At a recent show in Glasgow, Scotland, the 27-year-old revealed she grew a beard during pregnancy, an overlooked side effect of the process.

“When I got pregnant I had so much testosterone in me that I grew a beard," she said at the concert, according to U.K. publication the Mirror. "I only cropped it last night. It’s actually true. I’m not telling a joke. I actually have a beard, but I’m proud of it. I call it Larry.”

She also joked that her partner Simon Konecki has a beard as well and that he "trims it sometimes in the summer."

"I do have a beard myself so I can understand when it gets hot in the summer," she said.

Facial hair and pregnancy

Pregnancy site The Bump warns pregnant women that they may grow facial hair during pregnancy as a result of hormones.

"Your raging hormones can be blamed for this one, since they’re what’s causing your hair to grow at super-fast speeds and maybe even in some new (and embarrassing) places," Kaitlin Stanford wrote in her piece for The Bump.

Adele isn't the only woman to talk about this side effect. There are lots of forums online for expectant mothers to discuss this occurrence, and actress Drew Barrymore also revealed she grew a "goatee" while pregnant a few years ago.

“I got a wonderful little goatee — and it was red!” Barrymore told In Touch magazine in 2013. “I also got hyperpigmentation on my cheeks.”

Adele has confronted other pregnancy stigmas.

At another recent concert, Adele confronted the misconception that breastfeeding comes easily to all mothers and their children. Some babies, however, refuse to latch, and mothers can also struggle to produce milk.

"The pressure on [breastfeeding mommies] is fucking ridiculous," Adele said at a recent London show, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. "All those people who put pressure on us, you can go fuck yourselves, all right? Because it's hard. Some of us can't do it. I managed about nine weeks with [my] boobs."

She added that she wanted to breastfeed her son a lot but that she seemed to run out of milk along the way.

"All I wanted to do was breastfeed my kid and then I felt like, ‘if I was in the jungle right now back in the day, my kid would be dead because my milk’s gone,'" she said.
