Republican front-runner Donald Trump was forced to cancel a rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion on Friday evening when violence broke out between protesters and Trump supporters. Many of the protesters identified as supporters of Bernie Sanders and sought to challenge racist ideals often championed by Trump's campaign. But their motives were less clear to Donald Trump, Jr., the presidential candidate's son.

According to Trump, Jr., the Chicago protesters lacked reason and motive and were merely bandwagoners. Trump, Jr. even retweeted a tweet from former presidential candidate Newt Gringrich, who compared the Chicago protesters to fascists.

But artist John Legend had a simple, biting response to Trump, Jr.'s ignorance in a tweet that has since gone viral.

Legend makes a good point. Trump's hateful rhetoric has called to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and proposed to ban Muslims from entering the country. He has shared inaccurate tweets about black people and the crime rate in the U.S., and even gotten support from the KKK. Many think that violence has become a consistent problem at Trump rallies, between his supporters and activists. There's little cause to doubt that the protest was a direct response to the Trump campaign's penchant racial offensiveness.

Legend's bold, albeit simple, response has since received enthusiastic praise on Twitter.

And of course, wife Chrissy Teigen was among those who celebrated Legend's response.

What differentiated Friday's protest from previous ones at his rally was its tremendous turnout. While Trump claimed to have canceled the protest after consulting law enforcement, the Chicago Police Department told the AP that they never suggested Trump cancel the rally.

"We were not consulted, and we had no role in whether or not the event should be canceled,” Interim Chicago Police Superintendent John Escalante told the AP.

Although some protesters were arrested, many viewed the cancelation of the rally as a victory. In the video above, protesters were heard chanting, "We stopped Trump".
