The Body-Positive Ad That Networks Are Refusing to Air

March 11th 2016

The Lane Bryant ad campaign celebrating the full figures of body-activist Ashley Graham and other noted plus-size models is being rejected by major networks for being "inappropriate," Cosmopolitan reports.

The clothing line's latest ad, which promotes body diversity, was reportedly turned down by NBC and ABC or being too sexy, TMZ reports. But a representative from the NBC network said that the ad was not technically rejected, but rather that it was sent back for edits, according to NY Daily News.

"As part of the normal advertising standards process, we reviewed a rough cut of the ad and asked for minor edits to comply with broadcast indecency guidelines," NBC told the Daily News. "The ad was not rejected and we welcome the updated creative."

While the network felt that the ad did not hold up to its decency standards, Lane Bryant pointed out that there are other ads that are far more suggestive and inappropriate, according to the NY Daily News.

The 30-second spring ad called "This body" features shots of Graham and plus-size models Tara Lynn, Precious Lee, Denise Bidot and Georgia Pratt showing off their curves in lingerie and saying what their bodies are "made for."

Lynn, who is breastfeeding in the ad, says:

In an emailed statement to Cosmopolitan, Lane Bryant talked about the positive message behind their spring campaign.

"The THIS BODY campaign was meant to be a fun way for us to celebrate and honor women of all shapes and sizes. What is too much for some does not hold true for others. All women should be celebrated and feel empowered to express themselves as they see fit. We want her to know she can attract as much media attention, look just as striking as any woman, and decide what beautiful means to her. The THIS BODY commercial holds nothing back. It is a true celebration of women of all sizes doing what makes THEM feel beautiful whether its breastfeeding their newborn, flaunting their bodies the way they see fit, breaking down barriers all around and simply being who they are or want to be!"

But this is not the first time where Lane Bryant has faced push back for their campaigns. In 2010 ABC and FOX both refused to run one of its plus-size lingerie ad, CBS News reports.

Although ABC and NBC are hesitant to air the new Lane Bryant ad, the public is falling in love with this new body acceptance movement.

As ATTN: previously reported, popular retailer American Eagle Outfitters has received a lot of praise for featuring more plus-size models to headline some of their underwear line campaign. Earlier this year, the popular retailer included included plus-size Barbie Ferreira for their #AerieREAL campaign, to the delight of customers everywhere.

And in 2014, the company's sales jumped almost 10 percent after they announced they would decided to ditch airbrushing and Photoshopping its models for its underwear campaign.
