Shots Reported in Burns, Oregon Near Militia Occupation

January 27th 2016

Ammon Bundy, the leader of an armed militia outside of Burns, Oregon was arrested Tuesday night along with a number of his followers, according to the FBI.

Three shots were fired after law enforcement made a traffic stop, according to a statement from the FBI. It is not immediately clear who fired first, but one was confirmed dead and six others were arrested.

The Harney County Sheriff's office could not immediately be reached for confirmation by ATTN:. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported that the county's district hospital was on lockdown, but a public information officer there could not confirm any current emergency measures in place.

The armed militia have occupied the remote Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns since early January.

Early news reports told conflicting stories, but it seems that a confrontation took place as some militia members were on their way to John Day, a town about 70 miles north of Burns, for a community event. Fifty-six miles of the highway between the two towns had been closed off, and an Air Link helicopter was dispatched to the scene, according to news reports.

Bundy was scheduled to appear at an event in John Day, but he never showed up.

This is a developing story. Check back for more updates as details emerge.
