What Are The Most Popular New Year's Resolutions?

December 30th 2015

As 2016 comes blazing forward, so do the endless lists of New Year’s resolutions. According to the Statistic Brain Research Institute, 45 percent of Americans make resolutions for the new year, although only eight percent will succeed. People in their 20s have a far greater chance of reaching their goals with a 39 percent likelihood. This probability decreases to 14 percent for ages over 50.

Here are the most popular New Year's resolutions:

1. Weight Loss and Health.

Health and weight loss are by far the most picked New Year’s resolutions. A Details Magazine survey found that weight loss, exercise, and healthy eating make up 42 percent of all resolutions. The new year is often seen as the perfect beginning for a healthier lifestyle change.

2. Get Organized.

The second most popular resolution is the broad category of “get organized,” usually from a financial perspective. Many people use the new year to get back on top of their finances by trying to balance their budget, spend less, and save more. Getting organized can also apply to your career. Ten percent of resolutioners decide to take the risk of quitting their job and going for the one they really want before the New Year's adrenaline wears off.

3. Enjoy Life to the Fullest.

Always a favorite, enjoying life to the fullest is often seen in the top 10 for New Year’s resolutions. Many individuals take advantage of their time off during the holidays to resolve to be happier.

4. Learn Something New

Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, learning a different language, or trying out a new instrument, learning something new is a great way to add excitement and creativity to the new year.

5. Quit Smoking and/or Reduce Drinking.

Similar to the vow of living healthier, many Americans decide to quit smoking and reduce their amount of drinking. All of the holiday parties with one too many drinks can lead people to steer away from cigarettes and alcohol.

6. Find Love.

As many rom-com movies would suggest, finding love is another favored New Year’s resolution of choice. Winter romance is popular, especially with Valentine’s Day looming in the near future.

7. Spend More Time with Family and Friends

Spending time with loved ones over the holidays often spurs resolutions to spend even more time with family and friends throughout the next year. Reunited families and joyous holiday memories motivate people to make a greater effort to spend quality time with one another.
