The San Bernardino Tragedy Is the Worst Mass Shooting Since Sandy Hook

The Inland Regional Center shooting in San Bernardino, California, which killed at least 14 people and injured at least 17 people is the largest mass shooting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy that left 27 dead in December 2012. The San Bernardino shooting is the 355th shooting in the U.S. this year.

As ATTN:'s Kyle Jaeger noted in a previous article, there are only 29 days left in 2015, meaning "there have been more than daily mass shootings in America (355 in 336 days) this year."

Wednesday's shooting in San Bernardino took place at a facility for those with developmental disabilities. Authorities report there are one to three suspects responsible for the shooting. Many have reacted with sadness to the shooting on social media, including presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders, and Jeb Bush.

The most recent mass shooting in the U.S. took place less than a week ago at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood location. Suspected shooter Robert Lewis Dear killed three people at Planned Parenthood that day: University of Colorado police officer Garrett Swasey, Iraq war veteran Ke’Arre M. Stewart, and mother of two Jennifer Markovsky, all of whom had two kids. Exactly two months ago, Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, killing nine. Over the summer, Dylann Storm Roof attacked the historically Black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina and killed nine.

"The number of mass shootings so far this year has already surpassed the total number of mass shootings in 2014, according to the tracker," the Washington Post reported on November 30 and updated on Wednesday to incorporate the San Bernardino tragedy. "And the pace is well above 2013's pace, when a total of 363 mass shootings occurred."
