Three Dead in Shooting at Planned Parenthood Clinic in Colorado Springs

November 28th 2015

Three people are dead—two civilians and one police officer—after a gunman began shooting around and inside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs on Friday.

"UCCS has confirmed Garrett Swasey, 44, a six-year veteran of the UCCS Police, was killed in Friday's shooting," according to the Gazette. University of Colorado Colorado Springs Chancellor Pamela Shockley Zalabak released the following statement:

"It is with great sadness that I share the tragic events today at the offices of Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs have touched the campus of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

"A UCCS police officer, Garrett Swasey, 44, responded in support of Colorado Springs Police to the active shooter sitation at about 11:50 a.m. Friday. He was killed in the line of duty.

"UCCS officers are sworn, state-certified police officers. Officer Swansey was on duty at the campus and responded in support of Colorado Springs Police.

"Officer Swasey was a six-year veteran of the UCCS Police Department.

"UCCS is working with Officer Swasey's family and continues to support the Colorado Springs Police Department at the shooting scene.

"All questions about the investigation of Planned Parenthood shootings should be directed to the Colorado Springs Police Department."

The exact motive of the gunman currently remains unclear, but the location of the attack has already becoming highly politicized, as Planned Parenthood has been the subject of major controversy following the release of video tapes that purportedly shows some Planned Parenthood officials attempting to sell fetal tissue. The reportedly edited video tapes have since been widely discredited, although many Republicans in Congress cite the video in their efforts to end federal funding for the institution. As ATTN: reported in September, abortion accounts for a small percentage of Planned Parenthood's reproductive health services to men and women. This chart helps break down such services:
