Ted Cruz Is Going After Trans Teens

November 22nd 2015

U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz gave us another example of why Transgender Awareness Week is important: in a radio appearance, Cruz described President Barack Obama’s support for transgender teens as “lunacy.” Speaking with conservative radio show host Steven Crowder earlier this week, he took a brief pause from rallying against Syrian refugees to criticize the Obama administration’s stance that trans teens should be allowed to use gender appropriate restrooms.

“Look, these guys are so nutty that the federal government is going after school districts, trying to force them to let boys shower with little girls,” Cruz told Crowder, in the video released November 19. “Now listen: I’m the father of two daughters, and the idea that the federal government is coming in saying that boys, with all the god-given equipment of boys, can be in the shower room with junior high girls—this is lunacy!”

“You know, the funny thing is, my five-year-old knows there’s a difference between boys and girls," Cruz continued. "And yet modern Leftists can’t figure that out.” Watch the full clip of Cruz losing it over trans teens below:

What brought on Cruz's rant?

In an amicus brief submitted Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Justice argued in favor of trans teen Gavin Grimm, whose Gloucester, Virginia, school is making him use either the girls’ restroom or a unisex bathroom on campus, rather than the boys’ restroom. The document labeled the school’s actions a violation of federal law.

Grimm, who identifies as male, has spoken out previously about the case, saying that being forced to use a special unisex bathroom in the nurse’s office at the school was unbearable:

"It's humiliating, it's ostracizing and I don't want to take that walk of shame to the unisex bathroom and know that everyone who saw me go in there knows why I'm in there—because I'm different, and I've been marked different by my school and publicly. ... I'm not comfortable with it whatsoever. I'm not an 'other' and I'm not unisex, I'm a boy."

Grimm has been barred from using gender appropriate restrooms throughout this school year, since U.S. District Judge Robert Doumar of Norfolk, Virginia refused to grant a preliminary injunction to allow Grimm to use the boys’ restroom when his high school started their fall term in September. (Doumar cited medical science that he said showed that Grimm’s use of the boys’ bathroom would lead to “mating.” Per Doumar’s statement: “[T]he brain only has two instincts. One is called self-preservation, and the other is procreation.”)

Other candidates have also spoken out about bathroom access.

GOP candidate Ben Carson recently proposed that the transgender community use separate bathrooms entirely. Speaking with Fusion's Jorge Ramos, Carson said, “How about we have a transgender bathroom? It’s not fair for them to make everybody else uncomfortable.”

Meanwhile, Democratic frontrunners Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton both expressed their support for Proposition 1 in Texas, which was recently defeated but would have granted trans Houston residents access to public accommodations that matched their gender identity.
