Amber Rose Has an Important Message for Her Haters

October 13th 2015

Model Amber Rose reveals that body-shaming and slut-shaming online has actually made her stronger in an upcoming interview with MSNBC show "So POPular!"

Rose, who recently hosted Slut Walk LA this month to fight sexism against women, tells journalist Janet Mock in a sit-down chat that she has experienced a lot of body and slut-shaming on social media but that the negativity is what ultimately sparked her interest in hosting a Slut Walk of her own. The first Slut Walk took place several years ago in Canada after a police officer received backlash for saying that women should “avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”

“[The mean commenters] did the opposite of what they probably wanted," Rose says. "They wanted to belittle me and put me down and dumb me down. And it didn't. It was the driving force that brought all this on and created this feminist monster that always lives inside of me. And now it's here and I'm not stopping.”

Mock posted a video preview of the interview on social media late last week:

Rose adds that she and her team worked tirelessly to organize Slut Walk LA because of her dedication to the cause.

"It's been, oh, god, I want to say like six months," she says. "We've just been really, really working 12-hour days to really get this done. And it was just really important for me because I deal with a lot of equality issues every day. And I started looking around and realizing that I'm not the only one. And I wanted to do -- and it -- any and everything in my power to help women any way I can."

At Slut Walk LA, Rose delivered a tearful speech about being slut-shamed by ex-boyfriend, Kanye West and former husband, Wiz Khalifa. Earlier this year, West made news for saying that he had to take 30 showers before current wife Kim Kardashian would be with him because he dated Rose. Khalifa made fun of Rose for working as a stripper in one of his songs. Both incidents were very painful for Rose.

"Unfortunately, I was extremely slut-shamed,” Rose said. “I was called ‘nothing but a stripper.’ Why would he ever be interested in me, I’m just a bald-head stripper from Philly. I was a gold digger; apparently he had to take 30 showers after being with me ... [Wiz Khalifa] went on to make a song saying that he ‘fell in love with a stripper, but fell out of love quicker.’ As you can imagine, him being the love of my life, regardless if we’re going through a separation or not, that was extremely hurtful."

During Slut Walk, Rose's mother took a swipe at West for his remarks about her girl:

Several weeks before Slut Walk LA, Rose did a hilarious "Funny or Die" video challenging the stigma surrounding "the walk of shame." The video shows Rose happily leaving a man's house in her clothes from the night before, indicating she slept with him. Though females are often judged doing the "walk of shame," Rose couldn't be prouder of her fun experience and shows it's nothing to be ashamed of.
