This Comic Perfectly Explains Why Anxiety and Depression Are so Difficult to Fight

September 8th 2015

More than 40 million adults in America suffer from anxiety disorders, yet these mental health issues are often difficult to describe. That's why, according to Bored Panda, Nick Seluk, the artist behind popular webcomic The Awkward Yeti, partnered with Sarah Flanigan, a reader who told Seluk her story, to create "The Battle."

The comic highlights how people suffering with anxiety and depression often encounter a daily struggle. Seluk chronicled Flanigan's battle in an episode of the series "The Awkward Yeti Presents: Medical Stories Retold," which is posted on the webcomic platform Tapastic. The comic is below:

By describing anxiety and depression as teammates fighting against the individual struggling with mental illness, the artist shows how mental health can impact energy levels and motivation.

Seluk, the artist, identifies that it can be challenging to explain anxiety and depression to people who don't live with it.

“As someone who’s experienced and has been around anxiety and depression, it was easy to illustrate in a way that complemented the storyteller,” Seluk told Bored Panda. “Sometimes those who haven’t experienced the extremes don’t understand what it’s like, almost to the point of resenting it.”
