How Has Marriage Equality Changed Your Life? Reddit Responds

September 3rd 2015

It's been a few months since the Supreme Court handed down its historic ruling legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. As Americans have familiarized themselves with the new reality of marriage equality, they've found, as many predicted, that not much as changed.

In the years leading up to the court's ruling, critics of same-sex marriage said, however, that things would get pretty bad if members of the LGBT community were allowed to legally marry. Politicians such as Sen. Ted Cruz and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee — two current 2016 presidential candidates — said that Christian pastors would be arrested for practicing their religion. There were also some truly doomsday forecasts of a new American Civil War or even the end of the world.

Over at Reddit, users commented in a thread that asked "How has the legalization of gay marriage affected you?" The responses were funny, poignant, and ultimately a great summary of how Americans feel about same-sex marriage. Most favor it, most are happy to see it legal, and most are probably glad that at least this debate is behind us.

1. "My gold-digging efforts have gone from looking for only rich women to also looking for rich men."

2. "All the gay men who weren't trying to have sex with me before now aren't trying to marry me."

3. "I got to go to Santa Fe with my whole family and see my grandmas get married! They got married on their 40th anniversary."

4. "I have to come up with a new excuse as to why I don't want to get married now that 'I won't get married until everyone can.' is out."

5. "My choice of partner is now no longer split into people I could legally marry versus people I couldn't. Seriously, same-sex marriage is great for bisexual people..."

6. "A swarm of gay locusts ate all my crops, so... there's that."

7. "I make way more jokes about my brother in law settling down with a nice Jewish boy."

8. "The fact that gays can get married has made a laughingstock out of the institution of marriage, and destroyed the sanctity of the relationship I have with my wife and my side piece."

9. "It hasn't"

10. "Wow, can't believe I didn't see this comment more: I got married! So, yeah, kind of a big deal for me."
