A YouTube Star Has A Powerful Message For You on Bisexuality

July 8th 2015

Shane Dawson, a 26-year-old YouTuber with over 6.7 million subscribers, has come out as bisexual in a candid, emotional post he uploaded yesterday. With shoulders slumped and uncharacteristic solemnity, Dawson conceded that "this is a really hard video for me to make."

"I'm really scared, and I never thought I would be making this... ever," he admited to fans in the 14-minute video.

Dawson believes that the video "could help other people," and he went on to explain how, throughout his life (and especially over the course of the last year), he's regularly experienced feelings of sexual confusion.

"You know, I've always wished that I was gay—that I was just 100-percent gay—for so many reasons," Dawson said, his chin resting between folded arms on his desk. "Number one, that means I would know who I was; number two, it would be a lot easier for me to be accepted by people because, you know, I wear wigs and dresses on the internet, and I'm feminine, and all of these things—and it'd be so much easier to just be like, Oh yeah, I'm gay. But I'm not. I mean, I'm not completely gay."

But Dawson also recognizes that he doesn't identify as straight either. Through therapy sessions and self-reflection, the YouTube celebrity said that he's finally comfortable coming out at bisexual. The video post, boldly titled "I'm Bisexual," has received over 1.6 million views in less than 24 hours, and while many commenters have expressed their support for Dawson's decision to broadcast this admission, many seem to have taken the news without much surprise.

"Duh. Most of us already knew this," one top comment read, posted by user AnotherAgnostic. "You rock Shane and congrats on coming out."

Dawson responded to his followers on Twitter, thanking them for the widespread support he's received since the video was published:
