Women Are Fighting Sexist Double Standards on Social Media

July 7th 2015

As Facebook and Instagram continue to ban body parts that we all have -- specifically, female nipples -- a growing movement is fighting back against the rules. Ladies (and men) are rallying to #FreeTheNipple, and in the latest move against the gender hypocrisy, women are photoshopping men's nipples over female ones in an act of online liberation.

Instagram currently has this to say on nudity.

"We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram. This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos of post-mastectomy scarring and women actively breastfeeding are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too."

Facebook's standards are similar, although it doesn't bar famous women, including comedian Chelsea Handler, model Chrissy Teigen and artist Miley Cyrus, from discussing why banning female nipples is a double standard. Handler even created her own version of the famous photo of a shirtless Russian President Vladamir Putin on a horse in one of her now multiple banned photos. When Instagram disabled the image back in October 2014, she called them out moments before they banned it again, for the third time:

Here are several hilarious ways that women, whose bodies have long been the subject of unsolicited feedback, are re-nippling to fight back against hypocritical social media policies:
