There's A Disturbing Irony Between the McKinney Cop and Bree Newsome

July 2nd 2015

Brittney "Bree" Newsome, the 30-year-old activist who made headlines after removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina statehouse last week, says she has no regrets. In an interview with ABC News, Newsome emphasized that she "felt very strongly we needed that moment," and that the symbolic action was meant to show state government officials, as well as the national audience at large, that "enough is enough."

"The majority of people in this nation want peace," Newsome added. "We want to eliminate racism, and we want more equality, and I think the outpouring of support reflects that."

Newsome and other activists involved in the flag removal were booked on suspicion of defacing a public monument; if convicted, she faces a $5,000 fine and up to three years in prison.

On Twitter, Newsome notes the seeming hypocrisy of her criminal case:

South Carolina is set to hold talks on the state's continued use of what many consider to be a symbol of racism and white supremacy, but for now, the Confederate flag is still waving limply in a legislative limbo.
