The Internet erupted Thursday after Michigan Governor Rick Snyder (R) signed three pieces of legislation into law that enables private adoption services to refuse children to same-sex couples on religious grounds. According to Reuters, the American Civil Liberties Union claimed it would file a court challenge to the new laws.

The response to Michigan's new laws was poorly received by many, with some comparing the laws to the recent controversies in Indiana and Arkansas. Earlier this year, both states came under fire for signing religious freedom laws that would have protected businesses from refusing service to same-sex couples on religious grounds. Arkansas and Indiana ultimately passed revisions to their pieces of legislation following nationwide outcry and a lot of negative reactions from major public figures.
