There's finally been an exact age identified for when people have the most sex, and it may come as a surprise to some folks.

While studying sexual trends, researchers were able to pinpoint that people have the most sex shortly after their college years, according to a new study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior journal.

"It's possible sex education has encouraged young people to put off sex for longer," Dr. Jean Twenge, lead author of the study, told ATTN:.

Researchers looked at the General Social Survey, which has monitored social and political trends since 1972, and found that 25 years old is when people are having the most sex.

The survey has been tracking Americans' sexual habits since 1989, which included information from over 26,000 respondents. Beyond the age that people have the most sex, they also found that overall in recent years people are having less sex.

"Americans who were married or living together had sex 16 fewer times per year in 2010-2014 compared to 2000-2004," the researchers found, adding this was shown to be true regardless of age, where people lived, life situations, ethnicities and marital status. The study also noted that unmarried people are having more sex than married Americans, which is a reversal from what the data showed in the 1990s.

"Never married people had sex more often in the early 2000s compared to the early 1990s, probably because premarital sex became more acceptable and people started getting married later," Twenge, author of "Generation Me," told ATTN:. "But then, between 2008 and 2014, sexual frequency declined for both never married and married people."

Twenge added that people nowadays have more distractions, mostly due to technology, which may be a culprit. Millennials and those younger in age are actually having less sex than their older counterparts did when they were the same age, the study found.

Possibly the strangest discovery from the study was that people who work more hours actually have more sex.
