Sessions was a controversial pick given his past, namely that he was accused of making racist comments that denied him a federal judgeship. The Washington Post explains that in 1986, a Senate committee denied Sessions after hearing testimony from those who worked with him: "His former colleagues testified Sessions used the n-word and joked about the Ku Klux Klan, saying he thought they were 'okay, until he learned that they smoked marijuana.'"

After Sessions was picked by President Trump for Attorney General, David Duke, former Louisiana state legislator and Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan tweeted, "Mr. Trump’s appointment of Bannon, Flynn and Sessions are the first steps in the project of taking America back."
