On Tuesday, controversial pick for secretary of education Betsy DeVos was narrowly confirmed after Vice President Mike Pence broke a tie in the Senate.

At a local level, writer Alex Litel pointed out on Twitter, there are many school board elections coming up. "Don't let anyone to tell you to wait until 2018," Litel tweeted. "There are 464 school board elections in 33 states THIS YEAR."

"In 2017, 464 of America's largest school districts by enrollment are holding elections for 1,388 seats," according to Ballotpedia.org. "These elections will take place in 33 states. These districts collectively educated a total of 10,182,508 students during the 2014-2015 school year—20 percent of all K-12 students in the United States."
