Bar's Poster Sends a Powerful Message About Female Solidarity

November 2nd 2016

A creative sign at a British bar is empowering women to speak out about sexual violence and harassment in public. An photo of the sign has been widely circulated on Twitter.

The sign was created by a British city council and displayed in the women's restroom of a Lincolnshire bar, Ad Week reports.

It prompts women who feel unsafe in to use a code phrase to communicate with bar staff. "If you go to the bar and ask for 'Angela,' the bar staff will know you need help getting out of your situation and will call you a taxi or help you out discreetly — without too much fuss," the sign reads.

The sign mentions that women may even feel unsafe on dates or with Tinder matches.

The U.K. linked a 450 percent spike in sexual assaults over five years to the popularity of online dating, Vice reports.

Sexual violence isn't just a matter of "stranger danger," though anyone (including strangers) can commit sexual assault.

In the U.S., most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.
