The Coughing Prevention Machine Meme Continues the Attack on Hillary's Health

September 27th 2016

Conservatives have been obsessed with Hillary Clinton's coughing, which seems like grasping at straws to prove she's physically unfit to be president.

During the first presidential debate, the Democratic nominee likely had many goals, but with her health under intense scrutiny recently, one stood out: Do not cough.

Clinton notably did not have a coughing fit during the debate.

But that didn't stop Trump-supporting conspiracy theorists from coming up with an explanation.

America, meet the "coughing prevention machine."

It looks remarkably like the transmitter pack and wire to a lavalier microphone typically used for television appearances.

People on Twitter responded with bewilderment and of course, sarcasm.

Trump still accused Clinton of lacking the "stamina" to be commander in chief, even as he sniffled his own way through the debate.

#TrumpSniffles became a trending hashtag on social media during the debate, focusing attention on his own health.

Trump later denied he was suffering from the "sniffles." "No, no sniffles," he told Fox & Friends. "You know, the mic was very bad, but maybe it was good enough to hear breathing. But no sniffles. No cold."

The consensus was that Trump blew the debate and drew attention to his own health. Yet the "coughing prevention machine" meme seemed like a last-ditch effort at spinning the night's events against Hillary – just another one to add to the pile of unfounded conspiracy theories about her health.
