'Comrade' Trump Is Going to Hate Today's NY Daily News Cover

July 28th 2016

The New York Daily News has never minced words about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, and Thursday's cover page is no exception.

Bearing the headline "LOCK HIM UP!" the cover was shared on Twitter Wednesday evening and reads "Comrade Trump's treasonous call for Russia to hack Hil."

The paper references a controversial remark Trump made about the recent cyberattack on the Democratic National Committee at a Wednesday press conference.

There have been murmurs that the Russian government orchestrated the attack — which resulted in a damning email leak on the eve of the Democratic National Convention.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Trump said. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

He doubled down on his unusual request in a tweet.

Over the course of his presidential bid, it has grown increasingly difficult for viewers and journalists to feel genuinely surprised by anything that comes out of Trump's mouth or Twitter feed.

Yet, Trump's call to the Kremlin was historically unprecedented and inarguably shocking. In a statement, Clinton senior policy advisor Jake Sullivan deemed it "the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage."

The case for Trump's remark — whatever that case may be — is certainly not helped by Trump's history of praising Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Naturally, the Daily News referenced this in a clever Photoshop job portraying a scheming Putin gazing out from behind the Donald. They also turned the tables on calls to put Hillary Clinton behind bars, referencing cheers of "Lock her up!" from crowds and delegates at last week's Republican National Convention in Cleveland and suggested that Trump be jailed instead.
